The Diamonds History - Page 6

   BAD LUCK. A TRAGEDY STRUCK
They've had their fair share of bad luck such as the death of Glen Elgood, their tenor sax player, in a road accident.

EUROVISION SONG
Dave and the late David Hammond wrote and recorded a Christmas song with Steve, for which they took a children's choir to a London recording studio. It was about to entered in the Eurovision Song Contest, only to be withdrawn at the last minute on religious grounds. So near but so far.

STATUS QUO
Dave has written and recorded another Christmas Song with the band based on a Status Quo idea
·THE SINGER WHO WOULDN'T WIGGLE
Dave had many solo offers which he declined for his band The Diamonds. Together with Alan David they were asked to become the British version of The Everly Brothers. But only on their own. Dave refused. He wanted to stay with his band The Diamonds. His only problem was that he wouldn't wiggle, and after much publicity he eventually went his own way.
·SIXTIES WEEKEND
"With such a varied programme clearly it was not possible to see each act and highlights must be Danny Williams singing as well as ever and equally as agile, happy Susan Maugham, The very professional Diamonds, an on-form Billie Davis, the exceptional Merseybeats and the wild antics of Screaming Lord Sutch."
(See this article from 'The Stage' is in full).
·DIAMONDS TIMES TWO
In the late sixties a feud erupted between Dave and Steve because Steve and the Diamonds were touring with PJ Proby, and Dave decided to form his own band and call it The Diamonds. This he did, and went on tour of Italy. In this band, Dave acquired the services of world-famous guitarist Ray Flacke.
A bitter feud erupted, but all's well that ends well because Dave and Steve will always be mates and have since made many recordings together and have formed their own duo.

THE FUTURE
Who knows? The demand is still there and they are as popular as ever. In fact the band are considering re-introducing girl backing singers similar to the line up they had in their heyday back in the sixties. This, Steve said, will complete the line up which is at present: guitar-bass-drums-keyboards-sax-trumpet.
Steve Gordon wishes to place on record his thanks to his friend Big Jim Sullivan. He fired me up and encouraged me to play again.

-The story is obviously not yet over.

Future additions to this page will include sound recordings of The Diamonds (then and now), and, if at all possible, archive video!
